Hello Summer and new Navy Stripes....

Awning, Bengal, Candy - who knew there is a whole vocab dedicated to the humble stripe?

From the ultra-minimalist white, wide-leg pants being spruced up with thin lines, to all-new ways to wear a navy suit, there’s nothing dated about the way you’ll be pulling on stripes this Summer. While some choose to take a more-is-more maximalist approach, pairing the pattern head-to-toe, others rely on the subtle print to add interest to a timeless tee.

From classic Bretons to Nouveau Technicolour, this print has lived comfortably in your wardrobe for decades, sitting as a staple that is made to last. Nothing is as easy as throwing on your favourite raw hem jeans and a striped t-shirt, jumper or crisp shirt – somehow suggesting more effort was put in than you actually exerted. Stripes have that undeniable Parisian feel; pair a navy stripe t-shirt with some pointed court shoes for an effortless yet chic look or lose the heel for some pointed Starch sliders for a more relaxed, cool feel.

Although, the striped look is most synonymous for being on a cotton t-shirt with navy sailor-like stripes. The style was introduced in 1858 as the uniform for the French Navy, with the original design featuring 21 stripes, (one for each of Napoleon Bonaparte’s victories) and the distinctive stripes made it easier to spot wayward sailors who had fallen overboard against the waves.

Of course, this was all prior to the stripe possessing any serious fashion prominence until -after her trip to the French seaside - Coco Chanel took notice. Perhaps one of the few pieces in fashion that are truly timeless: the iconic designer was so inspired by the sailors’ t-shirts that she incorporated the stripes into her 1917 nautical collection, allowing women to abandon the restricting corset and revolutionised women’s casual wear.

Here at The White T-Shirt Co we have just launched a collection of quality, navy stripe numbers, perfect for both men and women – a design some claim was inspired by banking uniforms, with different banks creating slightly different styles of striping to identify their employees.

As you may expect we've added a little extra to our new navy stripe t-shirts. We've chosen a fine pinstripe organic cotton, buttery soft with extra-long cotton filaments twisted together for extra durability - naturally cool and comfortable for hot summer days.

A humble stripe is not only iconic in its own right, but when teamed with quality, organic cotton, our newest organic t-shirts make for another classic wardrobe staple – and if you ever happen to find yourself amongst difficult waves, have trust in your stripes.
